The Five Eyes alliance said advanced AI models capable of major cyberattacks are months away. The statement followed a Trump administration order limiting foreign access to Anthropic's top models. Experts noted risks for underprepared small businesses.
insightsonindia.comThe Five Eyes intelligence alliance issued a joint statement on Monday warning that frontier AI models capable of launching major cyberattacks are months away. Cnn reported that the grouping, which comprises the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, urged governments and corporate leaders to act now to improve defenses.
The statement followed a Trump administration order directing AI company Anthropic to suspend use of its most advanced models by foreign nationals.
The U.S. administration's directive targeted Anthropic's Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models. Anthropic stated it believed the U.S. government had become aware of a method of jailbreaking its public Fable model and said it has been meeting with the administration to resolve the issue.
“Frontier AI models are anticipated to exceed current industry expectations, transforming both offensive and defensive cyber capabilities. The timeline is not years, it is months,” the Five Eyes statement said. ” The alliance added that AI lowers barriers for malicious actors and increases the speed and complexity of attacks.
The Five Eyes statement recommended that organizations invest in cyber defenses, upgrade old systems, patch faulty software, and limit access to critical systems. It also noted that organizations integrating AI tools into security operations can detect vulnerabilities earlier, improve software quality, monitor unusual behaviour, and respond faster to incidents.
Olivia Shen, director of the Strategic Technologies Program at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, said there is a massive gap in the defenses of many governments and businesses.
She added that small and medium-sized businesses that have under-invested in cybersecurity will be more exposed.
