Five House Incumbents Face Primary Challenges in New York, Maryland and Utah
Four Democratic and Republican House members are competing in primaries Tuesday in districts where challengers have raised substantial funds or secured endorsements. The contests include two New York races backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a Maryland rematch funded by a former representative.

Four House incumbents have lost primaries so far this year, and five more face contests Tuesday that analysts have identified as competitive. Rep. Dan Goldman represents New York’s 10th District. He won the Democratic nomination in 2022 with 26 percent of the vote and took two-thirds of the vote in the 2024 primary.
He now faces Brad Lander, a former city comptroller who has the endorsement of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. An Emerson poll last month showed Lander leading Goldman by more than 30 points. Rep. Adriano Espaillat holds New York’s 13th District, which covers Harlem, northern Manhattan and parts of the Bronx.
The district is about 50 percent Hispanic and 25 percent Black.
Maryland and Utah contests Rep.
April McClain Delaney represents Maryland’s 6th District. She won the seat in 2024 after former Rep. David Trone ran for Senate. Trone is now seeking to reclaim the seat and has spent $25 million of his own money on the campaign. McClain Delaney’s husband, John Delaney, previously represented the district and self-funded his own campaigns.
Rep. Celeste Maloy represents Utah’s 3rd District. She won a 2023 special election and a 2024 primary by 176 votes. She now faces former state legislator Phil Lyman after a court redrew the congressional map. Maloy has President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
Rep. Blake Moore represents Utah’s 2nd District and chairs the House Republican Conference. He has Trump’s endorsement but lost three consecutive Utah GOP convention votes to challengers. State Rep. Karianne Lisonbee is his opponent in the primary.
