Five Italian Divers and One Maldivian Rescuer Die in Maldives Cave
Five Italian divers died during a cave dive in Vaavu Atoll on May 14. A Maldivian military diver also died while assisting search and rescue operations.

Benedetti’s body was recovered outside the cave. The other four were found inside. A sixth victim, Maldivian military diver Mohamed Mahudhee, died during the search and rescue effort.
Footage recorded in 2014 shows divers using flashlights to move through the nearly 100-foot-long cavern. The video was taken in the same location where the fatalities occurred. The footage illustrates the narrow passage and limited visibility inside the cave system.
