Five Killed, 44 Injured in Virginia Interstate Pileup Involving Motorcoach and Passenger Vehicles

The motorcoach first struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which then hit an Acura SUV and additional vehicles. Six vehicles were involved in total. Virginia State Police said the motorcoach failed to slow for traffic already slowing ahead of a work zone.
The five fatalities were Priscilla Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts, who was in the Suburban, and four members of the Doncev family of Greenfield, Massachusetts, who were in the Acura: Dimitri Doncev, 45; Ecaterina Doncev, 44; Emily Doncev, 13; and Mark Doncev, 7.
The Doncev family was traveling to a wedding in South Carolina. Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, was the driver of the motorcoach. Virginia State Police charged him with two counts of involuntary manslaughter on May 30, 2026, with additional charges pending.
Dong suffered injuries in the crash.
Thirty-four passengers were aboard the motorcoach, which was traveling from New York to Charlotte, North Carolina. The vehicle was operated by E&P Travel Inc. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Forty-four people were taken to hospitals, three with critical injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash. NTSB member Tom Chapman said the motorcoach was traveling at a high rate of speed with little or no braking before impact. "It seems fairly clear that if there was any braking there wasn’t much, because of the speed and severity of the collision," Chapman said.
The NTSB is examining the driver’s actions in the 72 hours before the crash, including possible sleep issues, distraction, drug or alcohol use, and language proficiency. The agency’s preliminary report is expected within 30 days. S.
