Five-star cornerback commits to Texas

Five-star cornerback John Meredith III announced his commitment to Texas on Friday. The ESPN-ranked No. 1 cornerback in the 2027 class selected the Longhorns over in-state finalist Texas A&M. Meredith, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound defender from Fort Worth, Texas, is the No.

2 overall recruit in the SC Next 300. He is the highest-ranked of eight top-300 prospects committed to Texas in the current recruiting class.

Meredith marks the program's second five-star commit in the 2027 class. Texas also added a pledge from in-state offensive tackle Brian Swanson earlier this week. Meredith is the third top-100 defender to join the class since June 11.

He took an official visit to Texas from June 5-7. Texas cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey and first-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp were central to the program's pursuit, sources said. Meredith also received interest from Alabama, Miami, Notre Dame and Penn State.

A district athletic committee ruled him ineligible earlier this month after his transfer from Euless Trinity High School to a nearby school. Sources close to the situation told ESPN that Meredith is expected to appeal the decision.
