Flash Flooding Kills at Least Eight in U.S.

Flash flooding killed at least eight people across the United States in recent days after severe thunderstorms battered New York City on Thursday. Torrential rain turned city streets into rivers on Saturday, stranding drivers on highways including the Brooklyn–Queens Expressway in Woodside, Queens, where firefighters drove through floodwaters to perform rescues.

Homeowners in Flushing, Queens, reported extensive damage from the flooding.

Among the dead were Capt. Spencer Long of the Provo Fire Department, his wife and three sons, who were swept away Friday afternoon by a flash flood at the Sunglow Campground in Utah's Fishlake National Forest near Bicknell. In Arizona, the body of Ernesto Ojeda, a 29-year-old man reported missing Friday after witnesses saw him pulled into the Santa Cruz River in Tucson, was recovered Saturday.

Gov. Greg Abbott said two people died in flash floods that struck Uvalde and Kerr counties in Texas' Hill Country. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and heavy rain are forecast Sunday from southern Virginia to northern Georgia, with Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Charlotte and Raleigh directly in the path.

Central and eastern North Carolina are bracing for possible flooding. Parts of the Dakotas and western Minnesota face thunderstorms with large hail Sunday afternoon and evening, while the Southwest expects widespread storms and rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. More than a thousand flights were canceled Sunday as airlines recovered from Saturday's disruptions in the Northeast.

The Federal Aviation Administration warned of possible delays Sunday evening due to thunderstorms in the Southeast. Heat advisories stretch from the Dakotas to the Gulf Coast, where temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s and feel like 105 degrees with humidity. An extreme heat watch covers parts of southeastern Kansas through at least Tuesday, when conditions may feel like 110 degrees.
