Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed an 83-page lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman on Monday. The complaint alleges that ChatGPT aided mass shooters, contributed to suicides, harmed critical thinking, and caused addiction in minors.

" It asks the court to hold Altman personally responsible for his conduct as CEO and to require OpenAI to follow the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.

Uthmeier's office began a criminal investigation into OpenAI in April after reviewing chat logs connected to a 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University that left two people dead. That probe remains active.

Seven families of victims from a February mass shooting in Canada filed a separate suit alleging the attacker used ChatGPT to plan the attack. OpenAI is also named in multiple wrongful-death cases claiming the chatbot contributed to users' harmful delusions and suicides.

The company stated in August that it continues to improve how its models detect signs of mental and emotional distress and has added parental controls. OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment on the Florida complaint. Uthmeier said at a Monday press conference that he expects other states to file similar actions.
