A construction worker in Florida returned $30,023 in cash he found inside a Wawa restroom after spending several days tracking down the owner. Luis Salazar discovered the black fanny pack on May 3. It contained bills ranging from singles to $100 notes and had been left behind by a customer who had already left the store.

Salazar had only a vague memory of the man’s clothing and no other identifiers. He searched the entire store without success. The owner, a 24-year-old man, realized the money was missing only after driving an entire county away. He had sold his childhood Pokémon collection for exactly $30,023 to cover costs for his younger sister’s medical procedure.

The owner contacted local police.

On May 7 he met Salazar at the station and received the fanny pack with every dollar intact.

I was like, ‘Oh my God, my freaking money’s gone. I’m out of all this bread. ’”

Salazar told reporters the man hugged him and cried upon receiving the money. He declined an offer of dinner and any public recognition.

The owner said he gave the full amount to his sister a few days later. He did not disclose the specific medical procedure.

$30,000 is great, but it’s not mine to keep.

Salazar stated he simply did what he considered the right thing.
