An 18-year-old senior at South Fork High School in Stuart, Florida, died in a crash on Thursday morning while driving to graduation practice. Christopher Brooks was traveling in his 2007 Honda Accord when the vehicle struck the rear of a dump truck, according to Martin County police.
Police said the car hit the truck without braking and that Brooks was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers have not determined whether he was wearing a seatbelt or what may have distracted him before the impact.
Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from the car and rushed to the scene. A semi-truck driver at the location attempted to open the car door but found it stuck. The dump truck driver and the semi-truck driver were not injured.
School held its graduation ceremony as scheduled later that day. Students placed a black and red gown over an empty chair and moved their tassels in Brooks' memory. The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
