Florida Woman Fatally Attacked by Two Pit Bulls While Walking Dog
A 50-year-old woman died after being mauled by two pit bulls in a residential area near Cocoa, Florida. Her partner witnessed the attack and attempted to intervene before emergency services arrived.
bbc.co.ukHer long-term partner was at home when he heard a cry for help and saw the dogs pulling the woman along the street. He ran to assist and found her on the ground with multiple bite wounds. The partner told local broadcaster WESH that he used a knife in an attempt to stop the attack while trying to control the bleeding.
The dogs returned and tried to drag the woman again before he could fully intervene. Emergency responders transported the woman by air to a hospital, where she died from her injuries. The partner described the attack as brutal and said he would never forget the scene.
Local residents had previously contacted authorities about the dogs. One neighbor told Florida Today that the animals had escaped before and that he had been afraid to leave his house at times. Another neighbor said security camera footage captured the incident and was provided to investigators.
The same neighbor noted that one of the dogs had attacked another resident and that the dogs had trapped his wife inside a vehicle on April 30.
Both pit bulls were taken into custody by animal control.
No charges have been filed against the owner, and the investigation remains ongoing. Florida enacted stricter penalties for owners of aggressive dogs after an eight-year-old boy was killed by a dog in 2024. The woman's father said she had a big heart and loved animals.
