Ford Ends F-150 Lightning Production, Plans $30,000 Electric Truck for 2027
Ford ended production of the F-150 Lightning after recording major losses on its electric vehicle business. The company will instead develop a lower-cost truck on its Universal Electric Vehicle platform for a 2027 debut.

Ford discontinued the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck and announced development of a $30,000 electric truck on its Universal Electric Vehicle platform, The Verge reported. The new model is scheduled for reveal in 2027, with production of a family of low-cost electric vehicles planned at the company's Kentucky assembly plant.
The automaker also scrapped plans for a next-generation electric truck codenamed T3 and an electric commercial van.
In their place, Ford will increase hybrid vehicle production, introduce an extended-range EV version of its F-series truck, and offer battery storage systems for AI data centers. Ford recorded a $19.5 billion writedown on its EV investments in 2025. Its Model e division lost more than $12 billion over the past two years, and EV sales fell more than 60 percent in November 2025.
The company had expected losses exceeding $5 billion on EVs and software for the full year. Ford announced its UEV platform plans in February 2026. Doug Field, the company's EV and software chief, will step down next month following the April 15 announcement.
Alan Clarke, a former Tesla engineer, will become vice president of advanced development projects and continue leading the UEV effort. The Verge reported that Ford still views EVs as the long-term direction but has concluded that oversize models lack a path to profitability.
