The recall covers Lincoln Navigator and Expedition models from 2018 to 2021, Explorer and Lincoln Aviator models from 2020 to 2021, and F-150 pickup trucks from 2020 to 2021.
All affected vehicles have park-by-wire functionality and 10R80 transmissions. A transmission park pawl may engage while the vehicle is in motion, damaging the park system. Drivers will see a wrench warning light on the dashboard, and the electronic parking brake will apply automatically if the vehicle fails to enter park mode when commanded.
Dealers will update the powertrain control module software and inspect and replace any damaged transmission components at no cost to owners. Interim notification letters are scheduled to be mailed August 3, with the remedy expected to be available by April 2027.
CBS News reported that Ford is separately recalling 36,046 Bronco vehicles from model years 2022 to 2026 because the fender flares may be improperly secured and can fall off.
Ford estimates that 1 percent of the vehicles in the main recall have the defect.
