National forecasters expect 8 to 14 named storms to form in the Atlantic between June 1 and November 30. The average for an Atlantic season is 14 storms. Of those expected this year, 3 to 6 are forecast to reach hurricane strength and 1 to 3 are expected to become major hurricanes.

Jacobs, who leads the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said the season is projected to be below average. He added that only one storm is needed to cause major damage. National Weather Service director Ken Graham said impacts from storms extend far inland.

Abnormally warm sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico increase the likelihood that storms will intensify. A warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture, which can lead to heavier rainfall when storms reach land. Forecasters also noted that a strong El Niño is expected to develop midway through the season.

Robert Ashe, the Acting Administrator for FEMA's Southeast region, attended the forecast announcement and stressed early preparation. He said residents should assist elderly neighbors and review evacuation plans. Local emergency agencies are the first to respond after landfall.

FEMA released hundreds of millions of dollars in delayed disaster funding in recent weeks. The agency has not rehired all staff lost in prior cuts. An agency spokesperson stated that FEMA is fully prepared for the 2026 hurricane season.
