Williamson served in the role from 2023 until her departure in December 2024. She was replaced by Nathan Barankin, a veteran of California politics who previously worked as a political consultant and adviser to Kamala Harris. Williamson was arrested approximately a year after leaving the governor's office and faces nearly two dozen charges related to three separate incidents.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges. A spokesperson for federal prosecutors stated that discussions regarding a resolution to the case are ongoing, while her attorney, McGregor Scott, did not respond to requests for comment.

Investigators state that in August 2024, Williamson, with assistance from Sacramento-based lobbyist Greg Campbell, created false documents in response to a subpoena related to the loans. Authorities began investigating the loans in September 2023. In a separate incident, Williamson is accused of helping Sean McCluskie, former chief of staff to Xavier Becerra, transfer money from a dormant campaign account.

Becerra was appointed Health and Human Services Secretary by former President Joe Biden, and McCluskie moved to Washington, D.C., with him. The indictment states that funds were transferred to at least three companies and disguised as payments for work by McCluskie's wife, who did not perform any services for those companies.
