Former Google Software Engineer Jason Zhang Details Layoff Experience and Job Search Strategy

Jason Zhang, a 25-year-old former software engineer at Google based in Seattle, was laid off from his position in March 2026. He described the layoff as occurring about a month before the report, during which time he handled various administrative tasks. Zhang stated that he has not told his immigrant parents about the layoff to avoid causing them worry.

Immediately after the layoff, Zhang focused on practical matters such as determining the duration of his health insurance coverage and scheduling appointments with new healthcare providers. He estimated that finding a new job in the current market could take several months. During the first week, he addressed logistics including his final paycheck and provider transitions.

Before Applications Zhang explained that he is not applying for jobs yet, prioritizing interview preparation instead.

He noted that many tech companies use similar technical and behavioral interview questions. Zhang aims to reach a high level of confidence in his preparation, targeting 80 to 100 percent readiness before pursuing opportunities. He plans to begin applying for positions in early or mid-May 2026.

To adapt to industry changes, Zhang is studying emerging AI tools, prompt engineering, and related skills. This approach, he said, positions him to succeed in a single strong interview rather than rushing into multiple unprepared ones.

Zhang's parents, who are immigrants, had viewed his Google employment as a significant family milestone that allowed him to contribute financially.

They follow news of tech industry layoffs and express concern about job security. Zhang intends to inform them only after securing a new role, as he believes earlier disclosure would increase their anxiety without aiding his search. Since the layoff, Zhang has increased time spent with friends and his girlfriend, including activities like visiting a tulip farm.
