Former senator says technology speeds political debate distortion

Former Sen. Ben Sasse recently stated that Congress is not wrestling with big or important questions right now. He added that the digital revolution accelerates almost everything about the human experience. At Unite America’s Invest in Democracy Summit, a participant observed that the sides in political debate no longer align as they once did.

The comment reflects a view that traditional boundaries of disagreement are being overtaken by questions about what rules still govern democracy.

One concern raised is the use of technology to accelerate not only communication but also distortion. In New Hampshire, anonymous actors distributed AI-generated deepfakes depicting fabricated violence and manipulated imagery intended to mislead voters about congressional candidate Stefany Shaheen.

A complaint filed with the state's Attorney General remains pending. Campaign tools are evolving rapidly, with strategies now including the generation of hyper-realistic video and audio on demand. Emerging firms can test hundreds of message variations and optimize persuasion with precision.

This development places every campaign in a similar position regarding synthetic media.

The ability of voters to trust what they are seeing and hearing is described as a prerequisite for any functioning democracy. When fabricated images and videos circulate indistinguishable from reality, that civic foundation begins to erode. Debate loses its meaning, accountability weakens, and elections become vulnerable to manipulation at scale.

The challenge posed by artificial intelligence in politics is whether the political system can establish boundaries before those changes undermine the conditions that make democratic competition possible. This will require transparency in political communication and accountability for those influencing elections.
