Former Scottish National Party chief executive Peter Murrell was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for embezzling more than £400,000 from the party. Murrell pleaded guilty to the offense, which took place between 2010 and 2022. He used the money to purchase cars, kitchenware and toiletries.
Judge Lord Young said the actions amounted to a significant breach of trust and described the crime as calculated and dishonest. The judge noted that Murrell was unable to halt the offending until his criminality was detected. The sentence was reduced from seven years because of the guilty plea.
Murrell's lawyer John Scullion KC said his client had become a figure of public ridicule and was overwhelmed by feelings of embarrassment and shame. Aamer Anwar, lawyer for former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, said she had been let down by her estranged husband and remains angry, hurt and distressed.
