Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani Hospitalized in Critical Condition

Rudy Giuliani, the 81-year-old former mayor of New York City who led the city through the September 11, 2001, attacks and served as personal attorney to former President Donald Trump, is hospitalized in critical but stable condition in Florida, according to a statement from his spokesman Ted Goodman on Sunday.

Goodman did not disclose the cause of the hospitalization or its duration. He stated that Giuliani is "facing this challenge with the same unwavering strength that has defined his life" and requested prayers for a swift recovery.

Giuliani, a Brooklyn native who earned a law degree from New York University in 1968, served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1983 to 1989, where he prosecuted mafia figures and Wall Street corruption cases. He was mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, during which time crime rates declined.

His response to the 9/11 attacks earned him the nickname "America's mayor" and Time magazine's Person of the Year award in 2001. Giuliani ran unsuccessfully for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and later worked as Trump's personal attorney, including on matters related to the 2020 election.

Giuliani has faced several legal proceedings related to his 2020 election activities. In September 2024, he was disbarred in New York for making false statements about the election. In December 2023, a federal jury in Georgia ordered him to pay nearly $150 million to election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss for defamation.

Giuliani filed for bankruptcy that month, but the case was dismissed in July 2024. He reached a settlement in January 2025 that allowed him to retain his Manhattan penthouse and most belongings in exchange for compensation to Freeman and Moss and an agreement not to defame them again.

Giuliani pleaded not guilty to state charges in Arizona connected to 2020 election efforts; the state's attorney general is appealing a ruling that requires the case to return to a grand jury because prosecutors did not present key legal text to jurors.

A related case in Georgia was dropped in November 2024 by a prosecutor appointed after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was disqualified.

On Friday, Giuliani hosted his online show "America's Mayor Live" from Palm Beach, Florida, during which he coughed, sounded raspy, and noted that his voice was "under the weather," opting to speak closer to the microphone.

Giuliani's recent health history includes a car accident in New Hampshire in August, resulting in a fractured thoracic vertebra, multiple lacerations, contusions, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg; he was hospitalized then with non-life-threatening injuries. He was also hospitalized for four days in 2020 while battling COVID-19.

President Trump posted about Giuliani's condition on Truth Social on May 3, 2026, stating: "Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, a True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition. Giuliani's son, Andrew Giuliani, serves as executive director of the presidential task force for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Giuliani has two adult children, Andrew and Caroline, from his second marriage to Donna Hanover.

He is divorced from his third wife, Judith Nathan, following a separation in 2019. Trump appointed Giuliani to an advisory council within the Department of Homeland Security in June.
