The victims were two men and two women, swept away by strong currents during the attempt. French local authorities confirmed the deaths, describing the boat as a taxi-boat used to pick up migrants along the northern French and Belgian coasts. m.
local time, involving multiple agencies. At least 42 people were rescued from the water. Around 30 others continued their journeys toward the UK after the incident. Thirty-seven of the rescued individuals received treatment in hospitals.
The boat sank due to the strong currents, according to François-Xavier Lauch, the prefect of Pas-de-Calais.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the deaths in French waters today. Every death in the Channel is a tragedy and a stark reminder of the dangers posed by criminal gangs exploiting vulnerable people for profit.”
The incident occurred amid increased migrant crossing attempts in the Channel, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. Yesterday, two small boats reached the UK, each carrying more than 80 migrants. Several launch attempts took place this morning, with at least one boat en route to the UK and others facing difficulties.
UK and French authorities have noted growing concerns over people smugglers cramming larger numbers of migrants onto boats. New reports indicate smugglers are increasingly using Belgium's shoreline for departures, with 17 such attempts this year compared to no more than two per year since 2021.
This shift follows tighter controls along the French coast, according to police spokesperson An Berger and EU border agency Frontex spokesperson Chris Borowski. Migrants pay approximately €2,000 to smugglers, facing risks including no guarantee of boarding, threats, and abuse such as sexual violence.
Last month, volunteers rescued 19 people from a sinking dinghy in De Haan, Belgium, where only one wore a life jacket.
The French authorities are leading the response to the incident, with UK support for the investigation. The UK government stated it will continue working with France and international partners to prevent such journeys.
“Another four lives have been needlessly lost to our deadly border. As our Government continues to focus on ineffective deterrents, tragedies continue to happen.”
In the first two months of 2026, 2,200 migrants crossed the Channel to Britain, per data from the University of Oxford's Migration Observatory. Last year, about 41,500 people made the crossing. More attempts are expected with improving weather conditions.
