Four Teams Advance to 2026 World Cup Semifinals

With one week remaining until the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Argentina, England, France and Spain are the only teams still in contention. Forty-four teams have been eliminated, including co-hosts Canada, Mexico and the United States along with Brazil and Germany. France reached the semifinals after winning all six of its matches.

The team defeated Senegal 3-1, Iraq 3-0 and Norway 4-1 in the group stage, then beat Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32. France advanced past Paraguay in the round of 16 on a second-half penalty from Kylian Mbappé and defeated Morocco 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

Mbappé scored eight goals and recorded three assists through the quarterfinals, while Ousmane Dembélé added five goals and two assists and Michael Olise recorded five assists.

Mbappé has now scored 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances. Spain also advanced after conceding just one goal through the quarterfinals. The team drew 0-0 with Cape Verde in its opener, then defeated Saudi Arabia 4-0, Uruguay 1-0 and Austria 3-0 in the group stage.

Spain beat Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16 on a 90th-minute goal by Mikel Merino and defeated Belgium 2-1 in the quarterfinals on an 88th-minute goal by Merino.
