France confirmed its first case of Ebola on its territory Wednesday in a doctor who returned from a humanitarian mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The patient tested positive after arriving on a commercial flight from Kinshasa and was immediately isolated. Authorities transferred the individual under secure conditions to a specialized hospital facility.
The patient remains in stable condition. Contact tracing is underway to identify exposed individuals. Identified contacts must self-isolate at home for 21 days and will be monitored by a regional health agency, according to Euronews.
An in-depth epidemiological investigation continues. The Democratic Republic of Congo declared its 17th Ebola outbreak on May 15. The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or specific treatment.
More than 1,000 cases and at least 260 deaths have been recorded in the country, with additional deaths reported in Uganda. The French Ministry of Health stated the risk to the wider population is low. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control assessed the risk of infection for the general European population as very low.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is monitoring the situation very closely.
