French authorities reported more than 890 arrests after disturbances broke out in multiple cities following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League victory at the weekend. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the total represented a 45 percent increase compared with the same period last year. He added that nearly 180 law enforcement officers were injured during the clashes.

The disturbances occurred after the club claimed the European title for the second year in a row. One man died riding his motorbike around the Paris ring road in celebration. Authorities reported stabbings and other attacks. Cars were set on fire and shops were looted during clashes between youths and police.

Police deployed additional units to contain the unrest in affected areas. President Emmanuel Macron received the team at the Elysee Palace on Sunday evening. Macron described the team as an "immense pride" for France but denounced the "unspeakable" violence.

"This is not football, this is not sport, this is not what we love," he said. No further details on charges or ongoing investigations were released in the initial statement.
