France recorded 2,025 excess deaths between June 22 and June 28 during a heatwave that produced the country's hottest June since records began in 1947. The French public health agency reported the figure, which represented a nearly 30 percent rise over expected levels. The health minister stated on July 3 that the final count is expected to rise once all data are processed.
The Paris region recorded a 62 percent increase in deaths during the same week. Deaths at home nationwide rose 91 percent. Temperatures exceeded 40 °C in many areas. Belgium recorded approximately 1,200 excess deaths from June 18 to June 29, according to its Health Ministry.
The Netherlands recorded approximately 480 excess deaths linked to the heatwave, mainly among people over 80. France, Belgium and the Netherlands together recorded at least 3,700 excess deaths from about June 20 to June 28. More than half of those occurred among people aged 85 or older, while 180 occurred among people under 65.
Forecasters warned of further extreme temperatures on the European continent in the days after July 3.
