France Records Hottest June on Record After Third Heatwave of 2026

France emerged from its third heatwave of 2026 on July 16 with June confirmed as the hottest month ever recorded in the country. Le Monde reported that the heat left residents stunned after weeks of extreme temperatures that closed schools, complicated work, and overheated homes. Santé Publique France recorded more than 2,000 excess deaths by late June, a figure described as provisional.

In Marseille's Sainte-Anne neighborhood, the air conditioning at the Maison du Bel-Âge activity club was set to 23°C while the outside temperature stood at 34°C that afternoon. Josiane Perez, 78, visited the club that day. She said she felt very worried when imagining the summers to come.

Catherine Goualo, 64, also at the club, stated that conversations among members turned to fears that next year would be worse and questions about how people would cope. Across France, from Brest to Nice, residents described the strain of managing children during school closures, taking exams in overheated rooms, and enduring physical exhaustion.

Le Monde reported that even those who expected warming from human activities were surprised by its speed and intensity.

Rym, a 46-year-old architect and mother of nine-year-old twins in Paris, said she knew it was going to happen but did not think it would arrive this soon or this intense.
