A doctor who tested positive for Ebola after returning from the Democratic Republic of Congo has recovered and left a French hospital, officials said Saturday. The physician flew to France on June 23 on an Air France flight. The patient reported only headaches and was otherwise nearly asymptomatic during treatment.
Case background It was the first time French authorities detected the virus on national territory. In 2014, two patients were transported to France during a West Africa outbreak, but both had already been diagnosed abroad. Five other passengers on the June 23 flight were identified as possible contacts and placed in isolation as a precaution.
Congo declared its latest Ebola outbreak on May 15. Government figures released July 2 showed at least 438 deaths among 1,406 confirmed infections. The patient worked for the Alliance for International Medical Action, an international medical humanitarian organization. Humanitarian workers are normally required to complete a three-week quarantine after contact with infected cases.
