VarietyFrance’s Lilith Films has boarded the Chilean drama “A Woman Wants to Die,” a co-production involving Chile’s Niña Niño Films, Argentina’s Gualicho Cine, and Brazil’s Superfilmes. The film stars Paulina García, who recently announced her directorial debut at Cannes. Singer-actress Dindi Jane plays opposite her. Constanza Figari will direct from a screenplay she wrote.
Figari said the screenplay began as a teen fantasy about suicide and later evolved after she had a child. She described the project as a conversation between a mother and daughter. The story follows 33-year-old Fernanda, who has a death wish. Her mother Susana takes her to a beach house and must decide whether to respect her daughter’s wish or intervene.
Niño Films, led by Roberto Doveris, developed the project. Doveris met Lilith Films’ Caroline Piras at the Marché du Film and agreed to co-produce the film. Doveris said the company seeks to work with women directors and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
He noted that García was chosen for her ability to move between drama and comedy. The project is backed by the Chilean Film Fund, Ibermedia, and Brazil’s Ancine. Niña Niño Films is also developing the series “Tough Skin,” directed by Alicia Scherson.
