France Starts Gas Injection Season Amid Middle East War Disruptions
France has begun its annual natural gas storage process for the upcoming winter. The effort occurs as the war in the Middle East affects global gas markets. Storage sites across the country aim to secure energy supplies against potential disruptions.
Substrate placeholder — needs reviewFrance has initiated its annual gas injection season, starting on April 1, 2026, to prepare for winter demand. This process involves storing gas in underground reservoirs to supplement regular supplies and mitigate any interruptions. The operation takes place against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East, which has impacted gas markets.
At the Storengy natural gas storage site in Saint-Illiers-la-Ville, Yvelines, pipelines carry gas from the main network and inject it deep underground through 27 vertical pipes. The site aims to store more than 600 million cubic meters of gas in a porous rock aquifer located between 330 and 460 meters below ground.
This aquifer extends for kilometers beneath rural pastures in the Ile-de-France region.
maintains 15 other storage sites nationwide, in addition to the one in Saint-Illiers-la-Ville. These reservoirs enable the country to cover about one third of national gas consumption during winter by withdrawing stored gas. On extremely cold days, this proportion can increase to as much as 80%, as observed in the winter of 2025.
Storengy, France's leading gas storage operator and a subsidiary of ENGIE, rents out storage capacity to gas suppliers such as TotalEnergies, ENGIE, and EDF. Charlotte Roule, director general of Storengy, stated that the stored gas covers a significant portion of consumption on very cold days.
These storage facilities serve as a cornerstone of France's energy security. They provide a buffer against supply disruptions from pipelines or ships. The gas injection season continues until the first cold snaps, ensuring reserves are available for peak demand periods.
