French Court Receives Complaint Over April Airstrike in Tyre

A Franco-Lebanese national filed a complaint Tuesday in Paris alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to an Israeli airstrike in Tyre, Lebanon. The complaint states that four members of the complainant's family died when aircraft struck a residential area shortly before a ceasefire was set to begin on April 16.
The strike destroyed five buildings and left the complainant's father in critical condition. Attorney Emmanuel Daoud submitted the filing on behalf of the 42-year-old complainant, who lives in France.
French courts can exercise universal jurisdiction over certain international crimes committed abroad. The complaint follows an earlier filing concerning Israeli military operations in Lebanon. An airstrike on June 3 also damaged part of Jabal Amel Hospital in Tyre, according to the report.
No enforcement mechanism exists for the Washington-brokered ceasefires between Israel and Lebanon, and referral to the International Criminal Court is not available under current conditions.
