A French court ruled against holding a trial on the use of chlordécone in the French West Indies, France 24 reported. The decision shuts down the possibility of an investigation into the insecticide's deployment across the region. Chlordécone was labeled possibly carcinogenic in 1979.
It was nevertheless applied in the French West Indies from 1972 until 1993. A by-law allowed the substance to continue in use after a ban was introduced in 1990. The associated health scandal has continued for 20 years.
