French-Israeli victims file complaint over Mélenchon remarks on terrorism definition

Several French-Israeli victims of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks filed a complaint on June 29 for glorifying terrorism against Jean-Luc Mélenchon and La France Insoumise. The complaint was submitted through Paris-based lawyer Nathanaël Majster. Mélenchon made the remarks on June 25 while speaking at a rally outside a Paris court in support of Anasse Kazib.
Kazib, a union leader and spokesperson for Révolution Permanente, faced trial that day on charges of glorifying terrorism connected to the same attacks. Several hundred people gathered outside the court before the hearing, which was adjourned shortly after it began when judges referred a constitutionality question to a higher court.
Mélenchon, the second speaker at the rally, addressed the use of glorifying terrorism charges since October 7 against those who decline to label Hamas actions as terrorism.
"You might think that, indeed, some among us would rejoice in terrorism, assuming that the acts we are speaking about truly are terrorism," he said. " Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise and a presidential candidate, had held his first campaign rally on June 7 in Saint-Denis.
