French Prosecutors Seek Corruption Convictions Against Sarkozy in Gaddafi Funding Case
French prosecutors on Tuesday requested that the Paris appeals court convict former President Nicolas Sarkozy of corruption, concealment of embezzlement of public funds and illegal campaign financing related to his 2007 presidential campaign. The move comes one day after they accused him of instigating a criminal conspiracy in the same case.
France 24French prosecutors will announce their requested sentences for Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday in his appeal of the conviction for accepting illegal campaign contributions from Muammar Gaddafi. The development marked a sharp escalation in the long-running Libyan funding case.
On Tuesday the prosecutor requested that the Paris appeals court convict Nicolas Sarkozy of corruption, concealment of embezzlement of public funds, and illegal campaign financing.
These three additional charges relate to receiving Libyan funds to finance the 2007 presidential election campaign. In the initial trial the judges dropped the three extra charges of corruption, concealment of embezzlement of public funds, and illegal campaign financing. Prosecutor Damien Brunet delivered the closing statement requesting the additional convictions.
In the initial trial prosecutors requested a seven-year prison term for Nicolas Sarkozy. He now faces up to 10 years in the appeal. The requests followed forceful accusations the previous day. On May 11, 2026 the prosecutor accused Nicolas Sarkozy of having been the instigator of a criminal conspiracy.
The charge of being the instigator of a criminal conspiracy earned Nicolas Sarkozy a five-year prison sentence in September 2025. Nicolas Sarkozy spent three weeks in prison late in 2025.
“Corruption is the core link among all the defendants, around which everything was devised. Nicolas Sarkozy and Claude Guéant, his closest aide, thought they were untouchable.”
“Corruption is the shortest path from one ego to another." — Damien Brunet, prosecutor Brunet had opened his case the day before the May 12 court appearance by labeling Sarkozy the instigator. The prosecutor painstakingly detailed arguments for the three charges that trial judges had previously rejected. Claude Guéant, who served Sarkozy as Elysée secretary general, separately wrote to some of the country's highest-level judges that he was suffering a "very grave injustice." The case has already produced a historic outcome for a modern French leader. Sarkozy became the first modern French president to serve time behind bars after spending three weeks in prison late last year. Wednesday's announcement on sentences will determine whether the appeals court adds the corruption-related convictions to his record.”
