French Soccer Player Kenzo Kies Dies After Drowning in Rhone River

Kenzo Kies, a 21-year-old French soccer player, died after drowning in the Rhone River near Lyon during a national heat wave. @ABC reported that Kies, who played for the Guingamp reserve team, was pulled from a prohibited swimming area on Monday in critical condition and later declared brain dead.
Guingamp and Saint-Etienne, where Kies spent seven years in the club's academy system, each issued statements paying tribute to him late Wednesday.
France recorded its hottest day for the second consecutive day on Wednesday. The Meteo France weather agency said the national thermal indicator reached a record 30 C (86 F), with temperatures exceeding 40 C (104 F) in locations including Paris. At least 40 people have died from drowning in France over the past week as residents sought relief in rivers and other bodies of water despite official warnings against unsupervised swimming, @ABC reported.
Most of those fatalities involved young people.
