The Federal Trade Commission and four state attorneys general allege WPATH promoted medical interventions for minors on evidence its leaders privately described as limited.
Fox NewsThe Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint in Texas federal court against the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, alleging the organization developed and promoted treatment guidelines for minors that relied on evidence its own leaders privately described as limited and uncertain.
The attorneys general of Alaska, Iowa, Nebraska, and Texas joined the filing. FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson said the case centers on whether families received complete information about the risks and benefits of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries.
"Children, but especially their parents, must have complete and truthful information when making decisions to purchase medical services," Ferguson stated. He added that the FTC has long pursued entities making deceptive health-related claims. The complaint cites a 2023 strategy memo from Dr.
It also references comments from Dr. " Federal regulators allege WPATH removed age minimums from its 2022 Standards of Care for procedures including breast removal surgeries without scientific justification. Internal discussions showed some leaders struggled to identify evidence-based reasons for the change, the complaint states.
WPATH is a co-sponsoring organization of the Endocrine Society's clinical practice guideline on gender dysphoria and gender incongruence. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has described WPATH and Endocrine Society guidance as the two most widely known clinical guidelines used by providers caring for youth with gender dysphoria.
Kurt Miceli, chief medical officer for Do No Harm, said the allegations raise questions about how the guidelines were developed.
"The conflicts of interest that are within the standards of care are significant, and again, not brought to light, and this is part of that deception, and the concern that WPATH has sort of stated that the science is there behind pediatric medical transition when it is not," Miceli said.
He added that WPATH "stacked the deck with folks who had a financial invested interest in promoting pediatric medical transition," resulting in guidelines that push hormones, puberty blockers, and surgeries. The complaint alleges WPATH promoted the procedures as "lifesaving" despite insufficient evidence they reduce suicide risk.
', and we hear that line repeated, which again is not supported by evidence by any means whatsoever," Miceli said. "The benefits that WPATH is claiming are there actually aren't. " The complaint alleges some minors who underwent the procedures experienced lasting complications including chronic pain, sexual dysfunction, urinary incontinence, fertility concerns, nerve damage, and ongoing psychological distress.
WPATH rejected the allegations on Wednesday, calling the lawsuit politically motivated and legally flawed. "This is the second time this year the Trump Administration has abused the authority of its agencies to interfere with Americans' rights to seek and obtain the healthcare that should be decided between a patient and their physician," the organization said.
WPATH also stated it has spent more than 50 years developing guidelines informed by established scientific standards, expert consensus, and patient-centered values.
Miceli said the lawsuit should prompt other medical organizations to review the evidence. "We need the American Medical Association, the Endocrine Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychiatric Association—the list goes on—we need them to look at the evidence as well, and they need to do that immediately," he said.
