Fujimori declared winner of Peru election by under 50,000 votes; runner-up alleges irregularities
Keiko Fujimori was declared the winner of Peru's June 7 presidential runoff by the National Jury of Elections on July 3. She received 50.135 percent of the vote to Roberto Sanchez's 49.865 percent. Fujimori is scheduled to take office on July 28.

Keiko Fujimori was declared the winner of Peru's presidential election by the National Jury of Elections on July 3. She received 9,223,000 votes, or 50.135 percent, compared with 9,173,000 votes, or 49.865 percent, for Roberto Sanchez in the June 7 runoff. The margin was less than 50,000 votes out of about 18 million total votes.
Fujimori will be sworn in on July 28. She will be Peru's ninth president in a decade. Fujimori ran for the presidency for the fourth time. The U.S. State Department congratulated Fujimori on her victory on July 1.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Donald Trump's administration looks forward to deepening cooperation on security, investment and trade. Roberto Sanchez alleged irregularities and fraud in the vote count but supplied no evidence.
Sanchez has taken his objections to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Fujimori is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori. She is 51 years old. Sanchez is 57 years old.
