G7 Summit Opens in France as US-Iran Deal Awaits Signing

The G7 summit began Monday in Evian-les-Bains, France, hours after the United States and Iran agreed a deal to end the Middle East war. The accord is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on Friday, 19 June 2026. President Donald Trump arrived in Evian-les-Bains on Monday after celebrating his 80th birthday the previous day.
He is scheduled to hold talks with President Emmanuel Macron at 1500 GMT, followed by a working dinner with all G7 participants. The summit runs for three days. G7 members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the emir of Qatar, and the president of the UAE are attending to discuss Iran. Leaders from Brazil, Egypt, India, Kenya, and South Korea are also present. A UK-France mission to aid the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has its assets in place and is ready to be deployed, Macron said.
European leaders have sought the reopening after shipping traffic was limited during the war, causing a spike in global energy prices. The summit will examine the consequences of the Iran accord for Lebanon, the lasting reopening of Hormuz, and Iran's ballistic activities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to arrive Tuesday.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia occurred more than four years earlier. Sam Altman of OpenAI, Dario Amodei of Anthropic, and Arthur Mensch of Mistral AI will attend a lunch on Wednesday on protecting minors in the digital sphere.
Leaders will also discuss Beijing's dominance in the market for rare earth minerals used in everyday electronic appliances, as well as limiting global economic imbalances and increasing control in the digital sphere, AI. A vast security lockdown is in place, mobilizing thousands of police and troops and extending to neighbouring Switzerland.
