SemaforOne-third of U.S. adults say they are extremely proud to be an American, according to Gallup polling reported by Semafor. The figure marks the lowest reading since the question was first asked 25 years ago.
In 2001, 55 percent of adults gave that response. The share reached 70 percent in 2004 after the Sept. 11 attacks. The latest results also show that 53 percent of adults describe themselves as extremely or very proud.
Republicans remain the most likely to express extreme pride at 70 percent, though that share fell seven points from the prior year. Twenty-eight percent of independents and 14 percent of Democrats gave the same answer. Twenty-two percent of all adults said they are moderately proud, 15 percent only a little proud and 9 percent not at all proud.
Separate AP-NORC polling found that pride in the way U.S. democracy works has fallen 14 points to 28 percent. Pride in the armed forces dropped 19 points since 2017, and pride in U.S. history fell 14 points over the same span.
