Garden Grove Evacuation Continues After Aerospace Plant Tank Overheats
Roughly 16,000 of 50,000 residents remain displaced after a chemical storage tank at GKN Aerospace overheated on Thursday. Officials stated the risk of explosion has largely passed but continue monitoring air quality and drainage systems.
Los Angeles TimesThousands of residents near a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove remain unable to return home after a 34,000-gallon tank containing methyl methacrylate overheated on Thursday. Officials ordered evacuations when the tank began to fail, and about 16,000 of the roughly 50,000 people initially displaced are still waiting for clearance to re-enter the area.
The tank holds methyl methacrylate, a flammable industrial chemical used in plastics and manufacturing. Health officials stated there was no contamination and no fumes were released during the incident.
Officials said they will continue monitoring the air for several months and inspecting sewer and storm drains for damage. The American Red Cross established an evacuation center at Freedom Hall in Fountain Valley. Some residents have returned to nearby communities such as Stanton, while others have stayed at shelters or in vehicles after space at the main center ran out.
