Gaza authorities reported on July 2, 2026, that more than 90 percent of the territory has been destroyed and Israeli forces control 80 percent of the enclave as the conflict reaches its 1,000th day. Gaza’s Government Media Office stated that at least 73,066 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 21,500 children and 1,022 babies.
Another 9,500 people are missing, many believed buried under rubble, and 173,514 have been wounded.
Israeli forces have dropped about 223,000 tonnes of explosives on Gaza, 16 times the amount the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. A Board of Peace established in January 2026 to oversee a ceasefire and reconstruction has not secured full Israeli compliance.
Only one-third of committed aid trucks are entering daily, and Israeli forces have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians since the October truce took effect last year. Gaza’s entire population faces extreme famine risk, with nearly 400,000 people surviving on one meal a day and 62 percent of primary healthcare medications out of stock.
The UN reported that human development in Gaza has been set back 77 years and life expectancy has fallen to 40 years. An estimated 68 million tonnes of rubble remain, with only 310,000 tonnes cleared, a pace that would require more than 140 years to complete. Municipalities have prepared a reconstruction blueprint called the Phoenix Plan.
