winnipegfreepress.comGaza health officials said Sunday the Palestinian death toll from the Israel-Hamas war has reached 73,001. The same officials reported five additional deaths that day: two in Khan Younis, one in central Gaza, and two from earlier wounds. More than 173,200 people have been wounded since the start of the war, according to the Health Ministry.
Ceasefire status A U.S.-brokered ceasefire reached in October ended full-scale operations and returned remaining hostages. Other elements of the deal remain stalled, with both sides accusing each other of violations while stating the agreement is still in effect.
Israeli forces have continued strikes inside Gaza, saying the actions target militants and respond to occasional attacks. Five Israeli soldiers have died since the truce began.
Background The war began after the Oct. 7, 2023 attack that killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. The Health Ministry, part of the Hamas-led government, maintains records viewed as generally reliable by United Nations agencies and independent experts.
The conflict has displaced most of Gaza's population of more than two million and left large parts of the territory in rubble.
