Gen Z Graduates Turn to Alternative Employment Paths Amid Job Market Challenges
Recent graduates from the classes of 2025 and 2026 are increasingly considering options like starting businesses, gig work, freelancing, and skilled trades due to fewer entry-level job opportunities. A ZipRecruiter report surveyed 3,000 graduates and found 38% eyeing entrepreneurship and 32.5% gig work.

The 2026 Graduate Report surveyed 1,500 graduates from the class of 2025 and 1,500 soon-to-be graduates from the class of 2026.
It found that 38% are considering starting their own business, 32.5% are looking at gig work, 28% are exploring freelance work, and 11% are pursuing skilled trades. Graduates are combining experiences from internships, side work, stepping-stone roles, and personal ventures, according to the report.
Nicole Bachaud, a labor economist at ZipRecruiter, stated that with fewer entry-level roles available, graduates' paths differ but many are succeeding.
Entry-level job postings accounted for 38.6% of all postings in March, down from 44% in 2023, the report noted. The number of clicks per job opening rose by nearly 22% year over year. Unemployment for recent graduates reached 5.6% in December, up 1.7 percentage points since October 2022, based on data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The overall unemployment rate stood at 4.2%, up 0.8 points in the same period. A survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers reported that employers plan to increase hiring of new graduates by 5.6%.
Several companies have reduced staff amid AI-related efficiency gains and spending. Block, led by Jack Dorsey, cut 40% of its headcount earlier this year and encouraged other firms to do the same. Meta announced a 10% workforce reduction this week amid heavy AI investments.
Microsoft is offering buyouts to employees to control costs during an AI spending increase. Oracle cut workers last month for similar reasons.
Despite challenges, 77% of the class of 2025 found roles within three months of graduation, up from 63.3% a year ago, per the ZipRecruiter report. Only one in four graduates is on their desired career path. The report attributes faster employment to increased job applications.
Services like Reverse Recruiting Agency apply to jobs on behalf of applicants. Some companies work with college students starting in their sophomore year to help secure positions before graduation.
