General Motors has announced a recall for more than 270,000 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles in the United States. The recall addresses a defect in the rearview camera system affecting models from 2023 to 2025. The issue can result in a distorted or blank image on the camera display.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has determined that the malfunction reduces visibility behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of collisions. According to an NHTSA safety recall report, the defect originates from a flaw in the bonding process for the camera housing supplied to General Motors.
This flaw, in combination with the camera's mounting configuration, permits moisture to enter the unit.
Motors states it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this camera fault.
The company identified the issue through its supplier. The recall aims to mitigate potential safety risks associated with impaired rear visibility during reversing maneuvers. Owners of affected vehicles can have their rearview cameras replaced at no cost at authorized Chevrolet dealerships.
Notification letters will be mailed to owners beginning May 18. Vehicle identification numbers can be checked on the NHTSA website to confirm if a vehicle is included in the recall.
