Genetic Study Finds Few Biological Ties in Medieval Swedish Graves

Genetic testing of human remains from medieval collective graves in Sweden found that children and adults buried together were rarely close biological relatives. Researchers examined DNA from multiple burial sites and compared genetic markers between individuals placed in the same graves. The analysis showed limited evidence of immediate family connections.

The study focused on graves where multiple people were interred together. In most cases, the genetic data did not support close kinship between the adults and children in those graves. The results indicate that burial groupings were often based on factors other than direct biological relationships.

The findings add to existing archaeological records of medieval burial customs in the region. They provide new data on how communities organized graves during that period.
