German Ambassador to Israel Steffen Seibert left the country this week after four years of service, Haaretz reported. Seibert held the post from 2022 until July 2026. He attended an October 2024 rally in Tel Aviv calling for the release of hostages held in Gaza.
Haaretz reported that Seibert drew admiration from segments of Israeli civil society while clashing at times with the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His public statements on settler violence drew particular notice from Netanyahu's allies.
Seibert said he continues to love Israel but believes political forces now threaten the aspects of the country he values most, according to the report.
