German federal prosecutors brought charges on Wednesday against a Ukrainian national in the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines, Euronews reported. , faces counts of attacks on civilian energy infrastructure, causing an explosives detonation, and demolition of built structures.
He was arrested in Italy in summer 2025 and extradited to Germany in November 2025, according to the prosecutors.
He remains in detention in Hamburg. Euronews reported that investigators allege Serhii K. led the team that carried out the operation and was in command aboard the yacht used in the attack. Evidence includes statements he made during phone calls to relatives and acquaintances while held in Italy.
The Nord Stream pipelines run under the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany and end at Lubmin in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The explosions ruptured Nord Stream 1, which had been Russia's main natural gas route to Germany until supplies were cut in August 2022, and damaged Nord Stream 2, which never entered service.
Serhii K. Is represented by the Berlin law firm Menaker and denies involvement, Reuters reported.
