Germany Deported 1,369 Gambians Between 2018 and 2025

Germany deported 1,369 Gambians to The Gambia between 2018 and 2025, AllAfrica reported. Seventy-seven percent of those removals took place after 2022. Dr Judith Altrogge of the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies presented the figures at the Migration Evidence Forum organized by the Centre for Research and Policy Development and GK partners.
She said 41 charter deportation flights landed in The Gambia during the period, carrying 578 people. Hundreds more Gambians returned on commercial flights. The Gambian population in Germany stood at 16,625 in 2025.
The community more than quadrupled between 2012 and 2016 before stabilizing near 16,000 people. New arrivals and departures have largely balanced each other since then. Asylum applications from Gambians peaked at 5,656 in 2016 and have since declined.
National visas issued by the German Embassy in Dakar rose from 183 in 2018 to 327 in 2024, with family reunification forming the largest share. In 2025, 10,280 Gambians held valid residence permits while 6,345 lived without them. The number of Gambians under toleration status, known as Duldung, reached a high of 6,580 in 2021 before falling.
Official employment among Gambians in Germany reached 9,513 people in 2025, or 57 percent of the community, up from 32 percent in 2012. Manufacturing remained the largest employer, followed by construction, retail, hospitality, transportation, and social care services.
