Germany Updates COVID-19 Vaccine Advice for Most Under 75

Germany's Standing Committee on Vaccination updated its COVID-19 recommendations on July 9, 2026, advising most people under 75 against receiving the shots. ZeroHedge reported that the committee issued a 33-page document stating a large proportion of the adult population now has hybrid immunity and is sufficiently protected against severe disease.

The committee said the prior recommendation to achieve baseline immunity for the adult population, including pregnant women without underlying conditions, no longer applies.

Standard vaccination recommendations will now cover only those aged 75 and older. STIKO's guidance remains advisory but shapes state policies and directives from the Federal Joint Committee. The panel includes members from the Robert Koch Institut representing pediatrics and virology.

In January 2026, STIKO had advised annual COVID-19 vaccination for people aged 60 and older. It also recommended a shot for adults aged 18-59 who had not received one previously, including women of childbearing age and pregnant women. The July update cited four categories of change.

Severe COVID-19 cases during pregnancy have become very rare. Case numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths have declined steadily, with deaths concentrated among those at least 75 years old. A seasonal pattern has also emerged, with peaks in late summer and early fall.

STIKO continues to recommend vaccination for people at increased risk from underlying conditions, including certain pregnant women.
