Getty Images reached a multiyear agreement with OpenAI on June 21 to display its licensed images inside ChatGPT search and discovery tools. The pact follows Getty's earlier lawsuit against Stability AI and a similar licensing arrangement with Perplexity.
ForbesGetty Images signed a multiyear display agreement with OpenAI on June 21 that places its licensed visuals into ChatGPT search and discovery experiences, Forbes reported. Craig Peters, CEO of Getty Images, said high-quality licensed visual content makes AI-powered search and discovery more useful and more trustworthy.
The release addressed display rights only and did not cover training of OpenAI models on Getty archives.
The agreement comes after Getty sued Stability AI in Delaware and the United Kingdom in early 2023. Getty accused the company of copying more than 12 million images to train the Stable Diffusion model. In November 2025 the High Court in London rejected Getty's central copyright claims after the company dropped its primary infringement and database claims and conceded it could not show training occurred in the United Kingdom.
The court found limited trademark infringement involving Getty and iStock watermarks in some outputs. Getty later dismissed its Delaware case and refiled in the Northern District of California. Getty signed a similar licensing arrangement with Perplexity in October 2025.
In June 2024 Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group sued AI music services Suno and Udio. Universal settled its case against Udio in October 2025 and licensed its catalog for a new AI music platform.
