Ghana Farmers in Five Regions Call for Release of Fertiliser Subsidy Funds
Farmers in five regions say the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has been unable to supply subsidised fertiliser because the Ministry of Finance has not released funds. Many have not received the subsidy since 2025.
theconversation.comFarmers in Ejura, Nkoranza, Techiman, Goaso and Sefwi Wiawso appealed on 15 June 2026 for the government to release funds for the fertiliser subsidy programme. AllAfrica reported that the Ministry of Food and Agriculture has been unable to supply subsidised fertilisers because the Ministry of Finance has not released the required funds.
The delay has left thousands of farmers without inputs at a critical stage of the season.
Many farmers said they have not benefited from the subsidy since 2025. Some have bought fertiliser at market prices while others have reduced the size of their farms or abandoned plots. At Goaso in the Ahafo Region, farmer Opanin Kwaku Ntiamoah said the current challenges were unprecedented in his more than 30 years of farming.
He stated that farming had been his main source of livelihood and support for his family for decades. Opanin Kwaku Ntiamoah said farms were "hungry" and that without fertiliser crops could not grow well. He added that many farmers were suffering and uncertain how long they could continue under present conditions.
The farmers called on the Ministries of Finance and Food and Agriculture to expedite the release of funds to prevent further losses in crop production and income.
