Giants first baseman apologizes to manager after ninth-inning dispute

San Francisco Giants first baseman Rafael Devers apologized to manager Tony Vitello after waving off a pinch runner and showing frustration during the ninth inning of a one-run loss to the Miami Marlins on Sunday. Devers said he believed Vitello was removing him because of a lingering hamstring issue.

"I think it was a misunderstanding," Devers said through an interpreter.

manager statements Vitello said the two discussed the matter on the flight back to San Francisco. "We sat next to each other on the plane, had a good conversation," Vitello said. "So, after that conversation ... it's a nonissue." Devers added that he apologized in the manager's office after the game. "It was the right thing to do," he said.

500. Vice president of baseball operations Buster Posey said the team is prone to missteps and that frustration is widespread. 238 with 97 strikeouts in 331 plate appearances this season. Posey has not ruled out trading some of the team's highest-paid players before the deadline.

Vitello defended Devers, saying he would go into battle with him anytime and that the player treats his family well.
