Lee recorded 27 hits over the stretch, the most by any Giant in that span since Buster Posey. He added two more hits in a 3-2 extra-inning loss, lifting his season average to .324.
Injury recovery and training method Lee missed the minimum 10 days with a mild back strain. During that period he stood in the batting cage against a Trajekt pitching machine without swinging. Interpreter Justin Han operated the machine, randomly feeding pitches so Lee could judge strikes and balls. Lee said the sessions helped him feel the location of offerings without taking swings.
Recent performance and context Since returning, Lee is 22-for-37.
His average ranks among the top five qualified hitters in the majors. Manager Tony Vitello attributed the improvement to Lee’s approach and rhythm at the plate. Vitello noted similarities to the style of Ichiro, one of Lee’s heroes. 340 career average over seven seasons.
